Location
This photo was taken on a hike through the Bolsa Chica Wetlands just outside of Huntington Beach California right on Pacific Coast Highway.Time
There is an absolute treasure trove of wildlife on this trail through the wetlands. The birds are very active in the early morning hours. This photo was taken just after dawn on 8/3/2018.Lighting
The lighting was perfect with the sun rising to capture the reflection, but still not intense enough to cause any issues with capturing detail.Equipment
The camera was a Canon 5DSR, Aperture f/5.6?ISO 200?Shutter 1/320?Focal Length 330/. The lease used was a Canon EF 100-400MM, 1:4.5-5.6 L. ISII USM.Inspiration
The reflection of the Crane in the water and the richer color of that reflection, as well as, the intensity of the bird fishing for a meal. The soft light and the stillness of the water also added to the shot.Editing
The only post processing was completed in Photoshop Elements using the auto haze removal, contrast, sharpness. In all likelihood some additional enhancement of the color, shadows and highlights may improve the final product also.In my camera bag
In addition to the Canon 5DSR body and the zoom lens used for this shot I carry a Canon Extender EF 1.4X III, a CanonEF 24-70MM 1:4 L IS USM, a canon macro lens, a set of ND filters and a circular polarizing filter for each lens size, extra batteries, a tripod, an auto shutter release and plenty of micro fiber lens cloths.Feedback
Get up early, enjoy the hike as well as the chance to get good shots. Be prepared to visit multiple times to attempt to capture variations in conditions like fog, different species, etc.. Also, finish the entire trail because there is a variety of wildlife in addition to the various types of birds.
