Behind The Lens

Location

My walk to work in the building of town council of Bridgnorth. This was in one of the local gardens around the church of St Leonards Bridgnorth is a busy market town famous for taking part in Britain in Bloom. I decided to get up early before work hours and take advantage of seeing the beautiful flowers on display as I have a fascination with flowers and nature.

Time

This was around 8am on summer walk to work in an office on a beautiful sunny day. I just decided to grab the camera instead of feeling gutted I hadn't.

Lighting

This small flowered garden was shaded by the listed building it decorated. I had the natural light of the sun shining down from behind me giving me enough light to get the colours right and not over exposed. I wanted the colours to pop from the image and the dark shadows to act as a backdrop. I also wanted to be able to capture the detail of the pistil of the flower.

Equipment

This was taken with the Nikon 3200. Using natural light and hand held. Nothing fancy about the equipment just making use of what I had in that moment.

Inspiration

Every image I take, I try to imagine it printed as wall art. From the perspective of what I think would look great on my wall. The natural beauty that surrounds us in this world is inspiring in itself. It's great to bring that natural colour and detail into your home and create focal points so family and guests alike. I've also found since capturing flowers it has insurpired me to learn more about nature and gardening. Researching flowers and plants and sharing as much as possible what I've found. I also like learning the meanings of flowers when given which was popular in the UK in victorian times.

Editing

I try not to do too much editing and focus on getting the image right from trial and error changing settings on the camera to get the shot I'm looking to achieve. Its usually just small edits in the contrast and colour depending on the look of the print I'd like to print.

In my camera bag

I usually carry two cameras with different size lenses to save me swapping and changing the lense and missing the shot I require. I have a Sony A290 which I love as its the first camera I had and given to me by my grandfather about 5 years ago. He was a keen photographer. I've since purchased the Sony telephoto lens 75-300. This allows me to capture special moments without getting in the way and getting the macro shots I love. I then invested in the Nikon 3200 as a backup and second shooter. I have many flash lights and filters nothing branded or very fancy really just equip that does the job and gets the effects I'm aiming to achieve.

Feedback

Famous quote..... Its not what you see, its how you see it. Something I try to follow in all walks of life. The beauty of digital photography as we know as that if you don't get it right first time change it up until you get the desired effect. Rule one never forget your camera even on your walk to work. When taking the shot fill your frame as though it's printed. You have the beauty in front of you make sure you don't miss any detail. Make the most of whatever backdrop of the focal point you have in the frame. Don't be afraid to experiment with settings and try something new rather than relying on the camera to do the work.
