The Mumbles, Swansea, South Wales
I have written off any prospect of capturing idyllic sun settings in a pool of crimson, or salmon-pink clouds streaking across the sky tonight. I often find the Met Office to be as reliable as Old Farmer’s Almanac, but the wretches’ prediction of barometric activity for today has been bang on. For six weeks I was melting in the heat, hardly able to sleep at night and turning up at work looking like a ghost and tired like a one-legged man after a kickboxing contest. Today, I am under the weather: dark clouds, brisk wind, heavy showers and the occasional forked lightning and clap of thunder. Still, there is hope because this is not my destination but only a stop. Tomorrow is the big day. For now, both anorak and camera have held up and that’s what matters…
This is the pier of the ever cosmopolitan Mumbles, the landmark of Swansea and start of the Gower peninsula. It is currently closed to the public owing to ongoing maintenance work, so a photo taken by its entrance would look as good as lipstick on a pig. In lieu of golden glow and glittering waters, this is the best I can conjure up for your pleasure. The time is 19:30 PM and the sun is descending towards its nadir, but the thick clouds won’t give away its position. I have been turning my head like a periscope, alas to no avail. All around me is grey, dull and wet. On a less sombre note though, our British summer is afoot… at last.

Thank you Amanda... you should see some other photos I took (still haven't opened the RAW files), showing the weather on the day. Shocking!

I love your piers … hope you get a break from all this heat .. we are in heatwave again so I know your pain … I do prefer this to the snow and cold we get though … lets hope you have far better weather for your next destination :) wonderful capture of mood :)

This scene reminds me of an old painting faded by age and exposure. Brilliant Mick! xx

The colours are a bit subdued, which fits in nicely with the predominant weather conditions at the time. But it is the clouds that make the photo in my opinion. Thanks Sal x

Fabulous ... I love these scenes. Glad you got the heat too. It was extremely hot and dry on this side of the Atlantic this summer as well. The jet stream cut Canada in two this year and the West side was cold this summer... we averaged 30C.
