Volcano - or just a tree knot? Nature is Weird

This tree's knot was quite noticeable because it was incredibly dark so I, of course, brought the macro lens over and fired off a few shots. What wasn't clear until after processing the image was just how disturbing looking it really is...well, not until after processing the image and taking a closer look. My husband and I stared at it for a few minutes in silence, and we both agreed: so very cool looking and disturbing at the same time.
Note how the bark will go in and out of focus as your eye follows the outer circle of the darkened part of the knot. I'm starting to get the hang of the 'focal length' trick of macro photography.
