Heatwave Sculpture

Antony Gormley statues... In the outback goldfields of Western Australia near Kalgoorlie, a place called Menzies has an unusual artwork on a famous lake called Lake Ballard. This shot was in the heat of the day with the distant statue rippled with heatwaves across the surface of a sticky red dirt. A male figure made of cast iron was one of the casts made with people of the area modelling for these unusual works of art. The 51 sculptures stand apart over the 10 square kilometres of this salt lake. they started off as black scuptures, but with time and weather over this salt covered lake they are now rusty iron coloured. they were placed here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Perth International arts festival. If you ever get the chance to see these fascinating sculptures, climb the hill and look out over the lake. There you will see these unusual sculptures dotted apart from eachother across the lake. the best time to see these is during the dry season unless you get there as the wet season has finished and are prepared to either stick in the mud or wade through the salt water that fills the lake. The statues are a good indication as to how much water is in the lake if you get there at this time of year. These and other pictures were taken when the mud on the surface was soft and slippery leaving tracks that added to some of the pictures taken from the top of the hill. If you visit this place in the dryer months, make sure you have plenty of water with you as temeratures here can get to 45 degrees plus, so walking around will take at least two hours to get to each and every sculpture. never underestimate the sun here as it can kill you.
