Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the stage of the Carnival Splendor late at night once the main performances were over and the dancer/model could get some space. She was a cast member and I was the director of the shows o board.

Time

It was about 11:30pm.

Lighting

We used the theater's lighting rig in order to get the overhead and side lighting. As you can see there is a direct light over her head to form a pool she stepped into. There was also some front lighting to fill out face and body.

Equipment

This was taken with the Canon 80D and a Manfrotto pro-tripod.

Inspiration

As a show director and photographer I'm interested in photographing dancers like this girl. She has exceptional lines and muscle tone so I wanted to capture that by using quit stark lighting.

Editing

Yes, I had to darken the area behind her due to the pattern on the curtain. I also desaurated all the colour to make B&W. This was all done in Photoshop Express.

In my camera bag

Battery charger!! All of my lenses, tripod, lens cleaning kit, snacks!

Feedback

Having a good understanding of dance lingo is important to get a shot like this or something similar. I was able to ask her to do certain moves in a way she'd understand rather than using layman language. Use a very fast shutter speed and be ready to shoot over and over to get the exact pose you are looking for. Also, be aware of the model and if she is getting tired, when to take a break.
