In the deep south of the US where cotton farming culture permeated the lifestyle of the time. Monday was laundry day. Afer the week-end when the house staff was doing a lot of laundry they would put on red beans to cook long and slow, not needing attention while they washed and hung out the laundry to dry. This in Venice gave remebrance of my heritage.
