Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken on Kootenay Lake, in British Columbia, Canada. This nest is located 3 kilometers north of Ainsworth Hot-springs, on the Balfour to Kaslo highway. The nest is built on a old dolphin, and is only about 35 meters from the edge of the highway. Google Earth: 49°45’40”N, 116°54’36”W.Time
This photo was taken July 21, 2018, at 13:42. We were travelling to Kaslo and photographing this nest was part of the plan for the day.Lighting
The day was bright, the sun was at a high angle. A high overcast diffused the light enough to provide good colour rendition without harsh contrast.Equipment
Equipment used was a Nikon D7100 camera mounted with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. No other equipment was used other than an open window in the vehicle we were in.Inspiration
I had been trying to photograph this nest for several years. Previous attempts were done by parking the vehicle in a small pullout on the opposite side of the road, then trying to position myself for a good view. The problem was, the adult ospreys would not cooperate. They would flee the nest and would not return until no people were around. On this occasion, I made sure I was in the passenger seat as we travelled north on the highway. It is not a busy road, so we were able to stop adjacent to the nest. I leaned out the window just far enough to get the shots I wanted. This time, the osprey was wary, it did not leave.Editing
The only processing was a bit of cropping. In my camera bag
I use Nikon cameras and have D7200’s mounted to a Tamron 18-400 mm lens, Nikon 80-400mm lens, and Nikon 200-500mm lens. I also have a D850 with a Nikon 24-300mm lens mounted to it. I decide what I’ll be looking to shoot before grabbing the appropriate camera. The long lenses are primarily for wildlife. The D850 and Tamron mounted D7200 are for landscape and night photography.Feedback
With this situation, observing the behaviour of the birds on several occasions was necessary to plan for the desired shots
