These wells are located in the small squares between apartment buildings throughout Venice, some of them more ornate than others. My understanding is that before the city had a more sophisticated system for the delivery of potable water to residents' homes, these small squares, raised slightly around the edges with carefully placed grates would collect and funnel rainwater into large terracotta cisterns beneath these wells and Venetians would come with buckets to get their water. They remain, but are all capped today.
