In this image, the mighty Tanana River winds through Alaska's Interior region. The main channel of the river is visible on the right side of the photograph, while a smaller channel created by high water winds down the center of the picture. The valley is home to many smaller rivers and streams, which drain into the Tanana. In turn, the Tanana River flows into the Yukon River. The name Tanana is derived from a Koyukon Athabaskan phrase meaning "trail river." The river is a very important travel route in Interior Alaska.
