Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in my home studio in Chicago.

Time

This was shot mid-day.

Lighting

This was a tricky shot given the goal of creating a non-photoshopped refection of the keyboard without any of the lighting also reflecting in his glasses. I used two strobes shot through umbrellas to pretty much light up everything including the background while tilting his head down to get the reflection.

Equipment

Camera: Nikon D750 Lens: Nikon 28-300, F3.5 - F5.6 Settings: F10, 1/80, 65mm 2 strobes 200w each 2 white umbrellas

Inspiration

I was shooting Justin (Justy), who is an upcoming singer/songwriter/musician. The shoot was for promotional material such as album covers, websites, and social media shots. He had several outfits and some instruments. I usually find using instruments in the shoot to be somewhat cheezy and cliche, but in this case, we were able to get a little more creative and found this angle. Once I set up the shot with the reflection I knew it we had something to work with.

Editing

There was very little post-processing done for this shot. Just some minor skin touch-ups and color adjustments. The reflection in the mirrored glasses is completely unedited and genuine.

In my camera bag

I primarily shoot with a Nikon D750. My go-to lenses are an 85mm F1.8 and a14-24mm F2.8. I also carry 2-3 Godox/Flashpoint ad200s with grids and gels, and 25" softboxes. In the studio, I use a beauty dish, 54" strip boxes, and sometimes a 65" parabolic umbrella.

Feedback

The goal is to find the look for your subject that best fits their personality and style. You may not know what this is when you start. When you're in the studio and searching for just the right shot, never be in a rush. Give yourself enough time to play and explore. This may get taxing on your subject so also try to make them feel relaxed and comfortable. Play music THEY like, provide water and give them breaks. Allow them to come up with ideas too and never dismiss them. This should be a fun experience for them. If they're having fun and are confident in you, you're more likely to find the shot you're looking for.
