Location
This photo was taken on the Southside of Chicago along Lake Michigan.Time
This was taken during a beautiful winter sunrise.Lighting
This is natural sunlight.Equipment
I was fairly new to photography and was using my first DSLR, a Samsung NX1000, and a kit lens.Inspiration
I was actually driving to work in January 2014 as the sun was coming up over the frozen lake. I had my camera with me so I pulled over and ran to the lake to catch this amazing sunrise. It was 20 below zero outside and the ice had engulfed the pier setting the stage for this shot.Editing
I was still new to post-processing so originally I over-processed this photo. I've since toned it down and only boosted the color just a bit.In my camera bag
Today I shoot with a Nikon D750 and I do more portrait work. My bag always has a few key lenses; an 85. F1.8, 16-28 F2.8, and a 28-300 F3.5-F5.6. I usually have a Godox/Flashpoint AD200 on hand as well.Feedback
This shot was all about timing, a bit of luck, and composition. But most importantly, it was about having gear with me when I witnessed this beauty of nature. Without the gear, this would've been an iPhone 3 shot.
