This photo was taken in Port Orchard, WA along the waterfront looking toward the Manette Bridge. This was one of the Manette Bridge's annual "Bridge Blast" 4th of July celebrations.Time
It was late evening. Approximately 10pm. During the summer months, the sun sets late and the firework show was set to begin once the sky was mostly dark.Lighting
I did nothing special for lighting. I let the fireworks do all the work. I set a slow shutter to big up the colors and just happened to time the shot right that I got a number of fireworks in the shot that worked well together. It's hit or miss and this one just worked out.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5300 with an 18-140mm lens. Obviously, a tripod was also necessary due to the longer exposure and desire to minimize shake.Inspiration
I love fireworks but they come and go so quickly. Taking photos of fireworks is special art. As the eye sees one firework and then another, slow shutter photography allows the fireworks to pile on a photo and multiple to be seen at the same time. It's all about timing and patience.Editing
Slightly, yes. In some cases, I pick up airplane light trails or a bit of noise. I will remove these as they distract from the overall picture.In my camera bag
Standard is my camera and three sizes of lenses (prime, 18-140, and 80-300). I also have at least 2 batteries, a charger, lens cloths, and a snack for just in case. Depending on the photography I am planning for, I may also include my tripod and a crystal sphere for more artsy shots.Feedback
Be patient and prepared to go to lots of firework shows to develop the skill. Since firework shows are few and far between, get practice with slow shutter photography by taking shots at night of buildings, the sky, or anything of interest. This helps you understand the camera and what needs to happen to get the correct lighting.
