Location
I took the photo at a friend's beach house in Thailand. He had bought the house over 20 years ago and had it lovingly renovated. It was a wonderful time there.Time
We celebrated Christmas Eve that day and that was very crazy for me because there is almost always snow at home at Christmas. The photo was taken on 12/24/2017 at 5:51 PM.Lighting
When I got there that day, I realized the possibility of a photo like that. Fortunately I had my photo backpack fully stocked and my old heavy telephoto lens was smiling at me. Now I had to somehow explain to the cook (who only speaks Thai) that he should not serve the food until after sunset. Another problem was that everyone in the photo speaks a different language and so I had to show and demonstrate a lot. The sunset lasts only 10 minutes at the equator and then I had to walk around the pond twice in an evening dress until everything finally fit. AND SHOT !! Since it was supposed to be a siluette picture I really didn't have to pay attention to the light.Equipment
In 2017 I still had my Nikon D7200 with a 70-210mm F4 NIKKOR lens. With crop factor, this corresponds to a focal length of around 330mm.Inspiration
Everyone in the photo got to know each other in a clinic, all of them immersed themselves in a new life and each of them you saw the happiness but also the pain and also the hope for an improvement. It was really incredibly rewarding and emotional. These people travel halfway around the world to finally be able to lead the life they feel and then spend Christmas alone in a small hotel room. I didn't want that and so I invited everyone to the beach house. All of this friendliness from my friend, the friendliness from the clinic (nurses were also there) and this special place inspired me to take this photo.Editing
Amazingly, I had to edit very little, I removed a few objects (rods in the water) and otherwise adjusted the normal development such as brightness, contrast, sharpening, etc. a little. In my camera bag
I always pack my bag explicitly with prime lenses, only when I'm on vacation or on longer tours do I use light zoom lenses, which I sometimes borrow. But what is always included are cleaning agents.Feedback
I have never seen such a play of colors in the sky in Europe as in Thailand. Furthermore, the possibilities of spots in Thailand are really great, but only if you have a lot of patience and an experienced guide because a lot in Thailand is privately owned. If you are planning a tour in Thailand, then also think about the extreme temperatures. I had to go to a hospital once because of the heat.
