This photo was taken inside the home of this singer near the balcony.Time
the photo was taken in noon. because we could photo this only in day time, i choose to take the photo in about 12 oclock. that way we wont got direct sun from his balcony.Lighting
The lighting is very simple to recreate and give very dramatic impact. but its only one flash with octabox from above and a reflector from below.Equipment
i've use my d750 with 24-70 if i remember it correctly. ad600bm as the main light with godox octabox. also a simple 5 in 1 reflectorInspiration
the guy in the photo is a friend of mine, he also have an hip hop band. he knows that I'm more a metal music person and I've told him that it would be nice to show him other visual perspective for him. i know that he had some rock music and metal routes before he started to sing for a hip hop band and he liked the idea. At first we planned to shoot all the band, but i suggest him to do him a shot only for himself.he told me he got some awesome couch that he want to be photo with. the rest is history.Editing
Even though I've used high speed sync flash on high numbers for darken the environment, it still wasn't dark enough. so in post i had to darken the surrounding. The next important thing that I did is color grading. this is a technique that involve color changing and shifting for bringing some different mood into the story.In my camera bag
I'm usually have a mindshiftgear backlight back (18 or 26, depending on how many stuff i need). nikon d750, 24-70, 70-200, 3 spare batteries, about 8 spare 64-128GB sd cards (I'm using second slot for backup), remote, sd card reader with type c - so i could copy and backup on phone when my laptop isn't there. rain cover, cleaning stuff for the lens, godox reciever and transmitter, lot of eneloop pro batteries and of course water. that's my sort of basic setup for portraits. flash stand and flash and modifiers on other bags usually. what i can recommend for everyone is using some folding hand truck to carry all the gear. that's will save your back one day and you will thank me.Feedback
light is photographer best friend. i believe that every photographer need to play with it. look for the light everywhere you can. when you watching movies or video clips look for the direction of light and how soft or harse it is. before thinking that you need lot of lights for everything, master the single light setup. the single and the main is the most important and the most flexible. this photo has been done with one light that gave it all the drama. sometimes that all what you need. experiment with single light and master it before you buying more lights.
