Behind The Lens

Location

This photo have been taken in a personal garden during an "open garden" event in Slindon (West Sussex, UK).

Time

This is probably one of my best photo taken during this event. The visit of these English gardens event lasted all day, since each inhabitant participated in this event by opening their gardens to the visitors. The gardens were all beautiful (the love and skill of the English for the garden is not a legend). At the end of the day all the visitors met at the vicar's house to drink a cup of tea (of course!!). This photo was taken during my last visit (before the vicar's house visite) at 6.20 PM.

Lighting

I took this picture in a flowerbed of roses while the rain fell (we are in England) which explains the drops of water on the flower. I had already framed my picture when suddenly the sun (yes yes) came by chance to illuminate the center of the flower. As I generally like a little dark pictures I added some vignetting and contrast with lightroom.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, an EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens, no tripod and flash have been used. (1/1250 s at f/2.8 70.0 mm at 500 iso)

Inspiration

In general I like the pictures a bit dark. Taking this picture I wanted to mark the opposition between the clarity and the beauty of this wonderful flower and the dark side of the background. In a way, to oppose beauty to darkness and ugliness.

Editing

As I said a little bit above I added some vignetting and contrast with lightroom to bring out even more the flower of the background. As I take all my photos in raw format, I can then play with the white balance settings. Here I slightly saturated the pink color of the flower. Then I applied a low cut (high-pass) filter setting in Photoshop to increase the sharpness a bit

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon 5D Mark III camera (I'm crazy of this camera!). Most of the time I use it with the Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens which is also amazing and very versatile. I also have several ND filters (1000 and 400) that I use with a remote control to do long exposure photos. I also take my "baby" (Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM) for close-ups and of course I also have a tripod !! So (as you can imagine) when I go outside to take pictures I also do some exercise (bodybuilding kind of) because my photo bag is very heavy...but I like it !

Feedback

One of the major features and skill of a photographer is to have patience to wait for the good conditions, which means waiting for the right time, the good light (which is the more complicated thing but the light should make the difference!!). Be prepared to face different types of weather conditions and different situations. You can also have an idea already in mind before taking the picture and more specifically for this kind of photo use a bright lens (at least f / 2.8) to increase the bokeh effect. Be inspired by other photographers and in a general way eat photo, sleep photo, and dream photo!!! Good luck ;)
