Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in the old town of Marrakesh in Morocco. My partner and I were staying in a riyhad near the city walls and I spotted this alley on our walk home from the market one afternoon.

Time

I took the shot mid-afternoon, when many Moroccans would be resting after lunch. The old town is very busy so finding anywhere at any time without a crowd of people in it is a real bonus.

Lighting

The light of a bright North African day is tempered by the tall buildings and narrow streets of Marrakesh. Light bounces around off buildings of many colours and textures. This creates some beautiful effects, some of which are only evident when you get to the post-processing stage.

Equipment

I’m not sure which camera I shooty this on. It was either a Fuji X Pro 2 or a Fuji X-T1, both of which I was using on that trip. Lens was probably a Fujinon 10-24mm

Inspiration

Everywhere you look in Marrakesh there are photos to be taken. This is one of many! I loved the feeling of framing the arch in the forefront Lenny it, and the detail on the distance beyond the shadows.

Editing

Some basic Lightroom tweaks; a crop, drop the highlights and bring up the shadow detail a little, sharpen...

In my camera bag

Sometimes it’s a bag full of Fuji glass and both the X pro 2 and X-T1, sometimes it’s just my iPhone. My favourite combo is the X Pro 2 with the 10-24 or the 55-200 Fujinon depending on whether I’m after street or scenic images.

Feedback

Marrakesh is a photographer’s dream, but please be aware that many Moroccans are sensitive about having their photos taken. This pic is a rare empty street that also happens to look good.
