Colony of Humbolt penguins on Cachagua Island a nature reserve of the coast of Chile near the city of Zapallar. The Humboldt penguin' (Spheniscus humboldti) is a South American penguin that breeds in coastal Chile and Peru. Its nearest relatives are the African penguin, the Magellanic penguin and the Galápagos penguin. (See my gallery to view Galapagos and Magellanic species) . The penguin is named after the cold water current it swims in. Humboldt penguins nest on islands and rocky coasts, burrowing holes in guano and sometimes using scrapes or caves. In South America the Humboldt penguin is found only along the Pacific coast. It is classified as an Endangered species. This was as close as we could get to photograph them.
