Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a trail just behind my old college campus that I would frequently visit each season change.

Time

I remember arriving on the trail around 2pm, it was a very cloudy day, great for lighting!

Lighting

It was the peak of the day for sunlight and the overcast made a nice natural diffusion , along with the pine trees that grew heavily on the trail that acted as a great negative fill. The snow also acted as a bounce for the light under her face.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D mk3 with a zoom lens 24-108mm f4 and the natural sunlight with the trees and snow as negative fill and bounce.

Inspiration

My girlfriend at the time wanted to take photos along the trail and wanted to take a nice picture for her to use on her social media.

Editing

I took the color completely out of the image for a monochromatic feel and also added the falling snowflakes afterwards! The original was completely clear.

In my camera bag

I carry all my lenses with me which are 2 zoom lenses and a 50mm fixed lens, a spare battery with charger and spare SD cards incase of overflow. I also have a large garbage bag on hand in case I'm stuck in a wet area or I need to climatize my gear in the winter.

Feedback

A telephoto lens and standing at a distance is your best bet for something this close up and shallow. 50mm will also do the trick but at the time I didn't have mine on hand so that was my creative workaround.
