Carbajal Valley at sunset from above in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
Along the valley runs the Olivia River, surrounded by bogs and forming meanders. The largest austral concentration of #peat in the world is located in Tierra del Fuego. It is an acid wetland of glacial origin where a large amount of organic material is accumulated, retaining up to 30% of the total carbon available in the subsoil and twice the carbon than the global forest biomass (equivalent to 75% of atmospheric carbon! ). In this way, they considerably help in the climate change mitigation. In addition, they also retain the large floods of water and regulate the subsequent flow, due to 90% of its composition is water. Considering they are large environmental regulators, most peatlands are protected.
