Ocotillo have both adventive leaves and adventive flowers: whenever it gets significant rain, it first puts out a crop of new leaves; then it puts out a new set of bright-red flowers. When the soil dries out, it drops both leaves and flowers-fruits, leaving only a thorny stem. It occurs in both the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts.
