PHOTOGRAPHY FOR ME, IS NOT LOOKING. IT'S A FEELING.

IT IS A WAY OF TOUCHING, OF LOVING.

IT IS A WAY TO REMEMBER LITTLE THINGS, THAT YOU CAPTURED LONG AFTER YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN EVERYTHING & WHAT YOU HAVE CAPTURED, IS FOREVER, IT CAN'T BE CHANGED.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created at one of the coastal cities of Kerala. I was in nearby village photographing Theyyam festival for 4 days. Last day of our tour, we are all relaxing and thought of visiting the coasts and relax a bit after hustling around capturing the festival. It is not exactly a beach, but an amalgamation of of water and rocks. My batteries were completely drained and I am glad I was here just to relax and the photography just came along.

Time

Well, this was one of those days, where I didn't plan anything. A random impromptu plan to just have a round around the coast or beach near the village I was staying, before we head back to the concrete jungle and get busy with our days chores. I just had my camera, mounted with a wide angle lens, and a tripod. I did enjoyed, for once not having my camera bag pack with me with all kinds of stuffs in it. So while just enjoying the water, and the scenery, as it came nearer and nearer to sunset, a nice soft cloud started rolling in and just stayed like a blue blanket and sun peeping out of it, and that is when I decided, let me capture it, without all those bells and whistles, ND filters, remote trigger and all...

Lighting

As we all know dawn and dusk and around that time is the best time to shoot, the sky added extra layer to the mood and I feel it enriches the image in its own way. I am not sure if I remove the sky, the image will fit the hype.

Equipment

The image was captured with a NIKON D750, at 16mm focal length with aperture open a f/20. I didn't had my full gear, so no ND filter or remote release. Self time mode of 3 seconds before the shots, and sometimes using built in intervalometer for 30 minutes for shots spread across 15 seconds to avoid camera shakes. I was on Induro Tripod.

Inspiration

Sometimes the best images are unplanned, and I guess this image makes a perfect example of it. Landscape photography always interested me, be it mountains, stream of river or coastal areas. I was at a perfect spot relaxing after my short photography excursion and God gifted me with an amazing sunset.

Editing

Yes some amount of post-processing is always involved with landscape images as I shoot in RAW. I generally do color correction using luminosity masks, adding contract, dodging and burning. I tend to keep them soft and not over do it. No blending of images was done here.

In my camera bag

Well a lot :) So I have my main camera body, D750 fitted with Nikkor 16-35 f4 lens. I also carry a 70-200f/2.8 lens for tight landscape shots. I generally rent a second body while traveling. Apart from that I have a set of ND filters, a big stopper, extra batteries, remote shutter release, gopro, cleaning cloths, cables, AA/AAA batteries, 1 2TB HD/1 512GB SSD, 8 memory cards and my 15" Macbook Pro.

Feedback

Travel as you can. Landscape photography is tough, it may seem simple, but its not. Waking up at 4AM in the morning, is the toughest part for me. Winters are my favorite time to go to high altitude, which allows me less or no tourists, so plan in shoulder or off seasons, to get the place for yourself. Read other photographer's works, or try to watch some tips and techniques over youtube. There are tons of resource available. But the best way to learn is to do, so go out and try out techniques you learned.
