This beautiful cat, the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus), is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list, partly due to habitat loss, a fate suffered by numerous large predators in recent years. Loss of living space limits population size, increasing inbreeding and all the stochastic problems associated. To further the issue, fishing cats are the target of poaching in countries like Thailand.
Needless to say, captive breeding programmes - like the one involving this gorgeous boy - are important in providing a gene pool and learning more about these cats.
