Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a local club, where they have 2 stages. A bigger for 500 people and a smaller for 150 where I shot this. I'm a self taught photographer and have taken pictures since late 2016 so I'm still learning.

Time

The photo was taken at night. The deal with the band was an interview before the the concert and stillshots during the concert so I spend some hours with the band this afternoon.

Lighting

The lightning on this stage was really bad, a photographers nightmare, very dark with a little green light. I couldn't go below ISO 3200, most of the time I used ISO 6400. So the challenge was to wait for the right moment where there was enough light.

Equipment

For this photo I used my old Canon EOS 700D with a Canon EF50mm f1/8

Inspiration

I was waiting for a moment where the singer of the band was exprresion his joy with the music and where the light was at it brightest.

Editing

Because of the high ISO and a lot of noise, I took the decision to go B/W. My normal workflow on concert pictures is normally to use DXO PhotoLab for some noise reduction and the make the rest in Lightroom. This photo is cropped and then made adjustment for B/W. I'm also still learning post-processing, looking at the photo today I think I would have deleted the microphone

In my camera bag

Normally I would have my Canon Eos 7Dmkll, my old 700D is retired, a 50mm f1/8 and a 85 mm f1/8 and the most important thing is earplugs !

Feedback

For this type of photo, concerts in general, first thing is to get a photopass. Because of bad light, some bright lenses is a must have, normally flash isn't allowed. Make some homework and study the band how the perform on stage, to have an idea of what you can expect. At the concert study the light and then wait for the right moment. And don't forget earplugs.
