Behind The Lens

Location

Long story short its taken from Newburgh NY. Long story is it's 60 miles north of NYC looking across the Hudson River at the City of Beacon.

Time

Around 8pm as the ferry transports the locals coming home from work in NYC

Lighting

Mother nature provided all the light this night. The snow covered mountains added some much needed contrast.

Equipment

I shot this with a Sony A6000 with 35mm lens. ISO 100, F2 and 66 second exposure. I used a ND filter and a tripod. Looking back and having learned so much since this was taken 3 years ago I would have ditched the ND filter and just closed the aperture. Not sure what I was thinking that night lol

Inspiration

I recently saw a picture of Mount Beacon and noticed how much the old Incline Railway path was visible when it was snow covered. I though about how cool it would be to take a long exposure showing the modern ferry vs old incline railway.

Editing

Just a little work on the exposure and straightening out the horizon line. It's been 3 years I think I might revisit this now.

In my camera bag

Lowepro backpack usually with a Sony A6600 and A6500. 12mm f2.0, 35mm f1.8, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8. Also a small godox flash and trigger. And of course spare batteries and an intervalometer.

Feedback

Think outside the box and just go for it. And a exposure calculator app helps when the ferry only runs twice an hour ;)
