Location
On a class walk for interesting subjects, I saw this in a culvert.Time
This shot was taken in the late afternoon, in the Arizona fall, when daylight isn't the strongest, but is still clear.I was interested in the texture and the shadows thrown among the rocks, reflecting similar shadows and textures on the feather itself.Lighting
Because this was late afternoon and in a culvert, I was able to avoid the harshest desert light. Anytime before 3pm and you risk harsh glare.Equipment
This was a class DSLR, I believe I was using auto settings, as I hadn't used the camera much yet.Inspiration
I loved the contrast in the airy lightness of the feather, the representation of air that it symbolizes and the concrete nature and rough texture of the stones. This is Air and Earth in close company.Editing
I used Photoshop to try several different treatments of light and dark contrast, before selecting this one as having the best balance. In my camera bag
Normally, I only have my small digital camera or a smartphone camera available.Feedback
This was a matter of close observation and finding something I liked. My instructor had us out taking pictures on campus so that she could see what we liked and help us improve our perspective. She always said it is a matter of being where the images are and looking closely.
