This photo was taken at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Georgeson Botanical Garden. Students at the University research which plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers can live in the harsh conditions of a Fairbanks Alaska winter. It's one of my most favorite places with lots of reasons to work on macro photos.Time
I live in the land of the midnight sun and this photo was taken at 9:30pm. Seems late, but when the sun doesn't set until after midnight, there is plenty of light. Love strolling the gardens with my camera late in the evening.Lighting
I really wanted to be careful with my exposure on this photo so that I wouldn't loose depth or blow out the greens. (Greens can be so tricky!!!!) I dropped my shutter speed a bit so that I didn't have to drop my aperture too much or push my ISO too high and loose the crisp focus. A tripod can be super helpful with lower shutter speeds.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark IV and a Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM. Nothing else.Inspiration
This tiny little flower brings back childhood memories of helping Mom in the flower beds, summers running around barefoot and having their wonderful scent drift into the house (Mom planted them right under our windows. This was a fun discovery since I didn't grow up in Alaska and hadn't learned that they grow well here.Editing
Only a little bit of post-processing - first a little cropping and then I dropped the exposure a little bit. That's it.In my camera bag
Best investments in my bag are my Canon 5D Mark IV and Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM. Some say this lens is heavy, but I don't go anywhere without it!! I also have a Canon 24-70 f2.8, 100MM Macro, and a 50MM F1.4. And it all fits in the best bag ever. Mindshift Gear's Backlight 18L backpack. (I still also get a second body and a 15 inch MacBook Pro in this things too!!)Feedback
Choose a calm day so that you are not competing with the wind and a lower shutter speed. That time just before sunset goes quickly, but can have amazing results.
