Behind The Lens

Location

A short bike ride away from where I use to live there was a nice little area of bike/walking paths that wrapped around two little man made reservoirs on the edge of town that I would frequently visit because of the variety of possible things to photograph ranging from a lot of wildlife, too decent open views of sunrises and even sunsets.

Time

It was early morning right as the sun had just arose from over the horizon. Lucky for me is such a beautiful morning where the sky was very colorful and happened to have some very low clouds that the Sun was just passing through at the time. Which you may think I misspoke in my previous sentence, but as the picture shows it's exactly what it did.

Lighting

Well as many of you are probably well aware of when photographing the sun directly or as your main focal point of your photo. It is all too easy to end up where the light from the sun just over powers everything and the exposure bleaches out any details. I've never took any classes or had any formal training in photography and just always approach it with a trial and error mentality while always experimenting. I've found a style for taking unique photos of the Sun that I really enjoy in which you can see all the details much clearer as far as how the Sun interacts with other elements in the photo.

Equipment

Nothing to fancy. Pretty basic equipment when you consider what most real photographers are packing. Just my Nikon D7200 with in this photo I wanna say most likely a Sigma 18-300mm f3.5 lens. Pretty basic stuff compared to most avid photographers. Maybe one day I'll actually win a constest and score some top end equipment. Which most likely will be the only way I will ever get the opportunity to see what I could do with high end gear. I don't foresee me ever affording those 10k lenses or even a full frame body anytime soon.

Inspiration

I often would head out shortly before dawn to that area in hopes of getting the chance and luck to capture some beautiful or unique thing to photograph. That morning was special in the sense of the cloud cover and placement in relation to the sun and it's path as it rose up that morning.

Editing

Very little post processing was done or even needed for the these shots. The camera was dialed in pretty spot on already. I just slightly tweaked some basic stuff like highlights and contrast some in order to highlight the most intriguing parts of this photo even better but the original looked very close to what you see here.

In my camera bag

Again I have a fairly modest means and approach in these regards. Usually just my Nikon D7200 along with a couple different lense. Like a Tamron 170-500mm F5.6 (my biggest lense) then my most all around lense the Sigma 18-300mm F3.5 and then a Nikon 50mm F2.8. With a lenses cloth and maybe a mini tripod.

Feedback

Just always be aware. Experiment with your cameras settings. I always shoot in manual mode and ojust try to have fun and experiment. I mean the worse thing is you end up just having to look through and delete a bunch of shots but just always keep an eye on your surroundings. There is so many interesting things happening right before our eyes or above ours heads all the time that the majority of people are completely oblivious to because they lack the eyes to see or the ears to hear or the minds to question for themselves.
