Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in our back yard. I drop a piece of black velvet behind to isolate the mushroom. Add a fill light to pick up some more detail in the shadows and then a quick tweak in lightroom to make it as natural to the eye.

Time

The image was taken late morning but in soft shade from larger tree.

Lighting

Used mostly the soft natural shade light but did add in a small amount of fill light, and a white card reflector laid on the ground in front of mushroom - just to lift the under shadows.

Equipment

Canon 5D - small floor tripod - small LED video light

Inspiration

Just amazed to see a mushroom like type growing in our back yard in the city. Also the vibrancy of the red inspired me to take the image.

Editing

I only tweaked slightly in lightroom as I prefer to get exposures and lighting correct through camera with original shot taken. It was only a small tweak with contrast / shadows and highlights. I always bracket my exposures so I get it right through camera.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D - - prime lens / 35mm to 70mm - small video LED light - small tripod for those travel away shots when you don't have a large tripod - backup Canon 650D with 200mmm / 400mm / 35 to 70mm / reflector / black velvet / heaps of batteries and cards

Feedback

Always try and capture in the right lighting. Sometimes you may have to wait or come back another time of day. Love soft overcast days, which means the tripod is such an important piece of equipment to have on hand. Experiment with bracketing exposures, angles of composition, depth of field and direction of fill lighting. e.g. Back light / front light / side light / high soft light above subject. A reflector or a simple piece of white card is always handy. Sometimes I will use the black velvet to subtract light from the side to create a shadow grad to one side.
