Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at an old friend's house. I remember us just hanging out and scattered all over her bedroom, bumping into each other while trying to find a shooting spot.

Time

This was taken on a sunny afternoon, under a quite harsh sunlight, allowing me to achieve a good contrast between light and shadows, which eventually inspired me to create shadow art with household items I grabbed from my friend's kitchen.

Lighting

This is one of the first photos I've taken after I got my first DSLR for photography class. I remember coming home, looking at these photos and smiling to myself because I haven't had many things to be proud of that school year until I saw this.

Equipment

I used a Canon 700D, the same one I'm using now. I've only had it for 4 years but it's seen through a lot and has gifted me so many memories to look back on. I've been thinking about investing on a new one, but it will definitely be painful to let go of this baby. It's taught me so much and taken me to so many places.

Inspiration

I was sitting with my back against a glass door, when a soft breeze blew the curtains and I saw their shadows dance across Nala's face. So I first made her hold a lace curtain near her face but it wasn't creating strong enough shadows. That's how I got the idea of taking a colander, but I found myself taking pretty much every kitchenware I could find that has holes in it.

Editing

I did minimal editing, just some color correction to cut back on the warmth a little bit. And just turned up the contrast to really bring out the highlights.

In my camera bag

Pretty much just my camera, a charger, and 2 batteries. Sometimes I bring an extra memory card if I'm shooting a 6 hour event and my 18-55mm lens if it's a small location (I shoot mainly with 50mm)

Feedback

I guess make sure the sun will be out on your shooting day and grab every kitchen ware with holes in it.
