Green is supposedly the colour of envy and when I used to see other people's waterfall shots in lush surroundings like this I did feel bit envious. Now that I've found this little spot I can finally get a few shots of my own.

Location
This shot was taken at a place called Henry's Reserve, a hidden gem only about 40 minutes drive from home.Time
I like to shoot waterfalls early or late in the day when there's less chance of direct sunlight on the subject. This one was shot at 4.15 in the afternoon in November 2017.Lighting
Direct sunlight can make waterfalls really difficult to shoot as the whitewater created by a long exposure can blow out really easily. There are a lot of trees growing over the stream so overhead sunlight would create a lot of light differential between the lit and shaded areas. I went for a late afternoon shoot on this occasion because this waterfall sits in a valley and with the sun being lower in the sky behind the falls it was not going to make exposure difficult.Equipment
Nikon D810, Nikkor 14-24 f2.8 lens, Sirui W-2204 Waterproof Carbon Fiber Tripod (waterproof sealing leg segments are really good for working in water), Lee SW150 polarising filterInspiration
I love shooting waterfalls especially when there is a lot of moss on the rocks for that amazing vibrant green colour. Until I found this little spot I had never shot a waterfall where there was this kind of wall to wall carpeting of moss so I used to be really envious of other peoples shots that were saturated with lush green. Since green is supposedly the colour of envy it seemed appropriate to use ENVY as the title for this photograph.Editing
Thanks to user-friendly lighting and an amazing amount of vibrant green this one didn't require a massive amount of work in post. I exposed the shot for the white of the water so I had to lift the exposure on the surrounding rocks and bush to balance things out.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D810, my Nikkor 14-2mm f2.8 which is an amazing landscape lens, a Nikkor 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 and a range of Lee filters from their SW150 range. I also always have reef shoes to protect my feet when I'm clambering through streams or rock pools at the beach.Feedback
Waterfalls are amazing places to visit and shoot but choosing the right conditions will save you a lot of frustration (both shooting and in post production). I use PhotoPills to work out the angle of the sun to avoid direct sunlight. I try to shoot waterfalls when there is a fair bit of cloud with nice texture and contrast which helps soften the light and makes any visible sky more interesting and less likely to be over exposed. A good water sealed tripod is helpful because often the best composition means being in the water. Having legs that are easily adjusted will make the whole process much more enjoyable on this kind of terrain where it's often impossible to find flat ground to set yourself up on.
