Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a small town auto and motorcycle show. Each year, my small rural community hosts a regional show featuring antique cars and trucks, street rods and hot rods, and specialty vehicles that are all clearly a "labor of love" for their owners. This photo captures an original paint job.

Time

This photo was taken mid morning, before the summer heat made exploring the vehicles parked up and down the main street of our small town too hot.

Lighting

When I framed this shot, I wanted to capture the symmetry and the depth of the greys in the color scheme. With all that chrome on the grill, it was incredibly difficult to get a shot without my own reflection in it.

Equipment

Although I generally shoot with a Nikon d3300 with a Tamron 70-300 mm lens, on this day I only had my cell phone camera with me. So, this picture was taken with a MotoX, using the standard setting (no zoom) and the included photo app. I did not need to do any post processing on it. I was happy with the colors, contrast, and feel and liked how I could frame the picture.

Inspiration

I generally enjoy macro photography, but I needed some "snapshot" pieces for a blog narrative I was writing. So, I took a bunch and played with a few more artistic attempts, too.

Editing

No, I didn't do any post processing on this shot.

In my camera bag

I'm a minimalist, mostly because I can't easily carry a lot of heavy gear due to some disability limitations. My normal kit includes a Nikon d3300 with a Tamron 70-300 lens. For me, it is a perfect combination that allows macro shots as well as distance shots without having to change lenses. I rarely lug my tripod, instead using an adapted walking stick which can become a stable, adjustable height monopod in moments when needed.

Feedback

I always carry something to take photos with, almost wherever I go. If I can't take long my regular camera and lens, I'll use a small Canon "Sure Shot" or even, as in this case, my MotoX cell phone camera. My advice, then, would be to "be prepared" and also to be open to shots you didn't expect to be taking. Play a lot- sometimes the ones you think will be deleted end up being "keepers."
