The Kea is found in the forested and alpine regions of South Island of New Zealand and are part of the parrot family. Theses birds are not so common and are protected to up their numbers. I think this one is a juvenile as he seemed to be 'fluffier' than the others. They have the most incredible colours on their wings and love to eat rubber...yes rubber on your car. Antennas, tyres and window rubber. Those beaks are razor sharp and I thank the gods I had taken out full insurance on the hire car.!!!

I think they prefer new rubber, as they did not attack the little buz box we had, but I too had full insurance just in case!!
