Location
This photo was taken on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. The event was the Dragoncon parade.Time
This is one of the more dramatic shots I got that day. It was around 9:00a and I had been there waiting about 2 hours. I had a good vantage point and, as I am tall, a good location to see and be seen. The CosPlay actors like to show off so all I had to do was call out tot them.Lighting
I was trying to back-light everyone against the light pavement so I used a long zoom lens (300mm) and got in close.Equipment
I shot this using my Canon 70D and a Canon 75-300 USM lensInspiration
I have always liked taking candid shots in action. I did some sports photography years ago so getting action shots in a parade was a similar challenge.Editing
I've thought about playing around with Lightroom and other applications but this shot is just as I took it. Perhaps I will be more creative in post process in the future but, many times, the shot is what I am looking for when I take it. That doesn't mean they all turn out (most do not). I do frequently leave a little room for cropping. In my camera bag
I use a backpack camera bag setup. I always carry three lenses (50mm, 28-135mm and 75-300). I carry a flash unit but rarely use it. Along with the cleaning supplies, I keep spare batteries, a camera setup cheat sheet and snacks.Feedback
My advice for those taking pictures like this is to have a good zoom lens. That was the subject will look more natural without knowing how close in you decide to take the shot. I find this also works with family event shots.
