Behind The Lens

Location

Falls of Rough in Kentucky. I’ve been in Kentucky for 16 years and have never heard of that place till my fiancé yold me about it.

Time

It was at about 3 p.m. so i would guess early evening that day. I was just so captivated bu the sights and smells. I remember getting there and immediately my photographer instincts started tingling. I looked at my fiancé who was with me and said “I wonder?” I pulled out my phone and took the photo.

Lighting

I wanted this image to portray a calm scene while atill keeping up with its breathtaking view. Keep the detail while highlighting all the history of the photo.

Equipment

I only had my iPhone 8+ on hand. It was a day between me and my fiancé so i didn’t think to bring my camera. This visit to the falls was a surprise.

Inspiration

I was taken back by the scene myself. When i looked at the waterfall and the way the old mill was placed in perfect position with the water. My mind instantly got thia sense to take the photo. It took three different shots before i had the perfect spot.

Editing

I did post edit this. Although my phone has a black and white filter on it. I decided to use Lightroom to do that. Just some minor tweaks to detail and sharpness and a few other adjustments. That gave me this clear image.

In my camera bag

Since I am an amateur just starting out I don’t have a lot of equipment. I have a Cannon Powershot SX730 HS. That camera doesn’t have an lenses to attcah to it. Its all on the photographer to tale the image as best they can. I love it. It’s given me so many great shots.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to take a chances, make mistakes, get curious. Stand there for 45 minutes waiting for the right lighting. If you can’t get to your camera in time. Use your phone, even if it’s a quick shot. At least you got the shot. There are two very important pieces of advice for trying to capture something similar to this. One is be patient with taking the shot. It may not have the right lighting or the suns off by a few inches or somethings in the way. Be patient with it. Eventually you will have the shot you ao desire. And two is don’t be afraid of doing something risky to get the shot. I went to the very edge of a bridge over the bridge with my phone to capture that image.
