Behind The Lens

Location
We were on location at Butcher Jones Beach, which is a beautiful spot on Saguaro Lake in Arizona.
Time
It was around 6:00pm on Memorial Day and the funny thing is that it was actually a really warm day. We had been filming a music video for a local band but in between we were also doing ad work for multiple companies. One of which included this fur hood by the company "Stardust Love."
Lighting
By the end of the shoot we found ourselves sitting in the shade of a nearby rock face and the soft shadow it casted was perfect for this type of photo. I used all natural lighting and interestingly enough the types of pebbles around this lake reflected the most subtle of blues needed for the tone I was going for.
Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 5D Mark ll with a 24-105mm lens at a focal length of 96/1. My shutter speed was at 200/1, ISO at 250 and my Aperture at f/4.
Inspiration
Honestly this was one of those "spur of the moment" pictures. I saw that the texture of the hood would be a great frame that would contour her face. Earlier in the day she had been playing "Mother Nature" in a music video for my friends band "The World To Come." Not only was "Mother Nature" a giver of Life but she also had the ability to take it too. She was not something to be messed with but was still to be respected. So the result was a raw, courageous, fierce emotion bottled up in this calm and content woman.
Editing
I actually didn't do much, maybe about 15 minutes of work in Lightroom. I had taken the photo in RAW and did have to make it "Pop" more. The most work done was on the eyes. I used the brush in Lightroom to paint a colored and brightening exposure mask that matched the exact colors of her eyes.
In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack are the essentials because I am known to forget at least one important thing. I am getting better at not forgetting.....I think. Anyways I have five 64GB Compact Flash cards that go in a special water tight case, four of which I never use because "how am I supposed to fill up a card that big on one shoot?" I then only have two batteries; yes two! As they do last a long time, I am now realizing I over compensate for memory and under compensate for battery life. Not the best choice really. Who wants to buy some memory cards? I then pack my Canon EOS 5D Mark ll with a 40mm 2.8 pancake lens attached for better Tetris style packing. The pancake lens although is probably my favorite lens for portraits. It's very sharp and just has a great feel to it. Next comes my Canon L Series 24-105mm 4.0 wide angle zoom lens which is great for Landscapes, Portraits, Sports, you name it! It truly is an all around must. I also have a 20mm 2.8 wide angle lens that I use mostly for Landscapes and Real Estate photos and lastly a nifty little experimental accordion looking lens called "Muse" by Lensbaby. They have a bunch of different inserts for dreamy looking photos. As for a flash I have a Canon Speedlite 550 EX but the mount broke and I'm bummed so can someone pleeeease fix it!?
Feedback
Soft natural lighting was key here but finding a model who can tell a story solely with their expressions is very important too. I would say always shoot in RAW if you can and be mindful of the colors reflected off of different objects.
