Location
This photo was taken at Davenport Landing State Beach, several miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. The beach has a wonderful low cliff that overlooks one side of the beach and people love to walk up and stand on it, so it makes for great opportunities for shots.Time
This was in the late afternoon/early evening, as the sun was coming down lower in the sky at a nice angle for shooting.Lighting
The sun's position made the lighting excellent for this shot. It wasn't too far down on the horizon, which would have cast the dog in too harsh a light. As it was, I barely got this shot in time, and I had to squeeze some life out of the shadows. Luckily I always shoot RAW to maximize the possibility of saving any part of the image lost to over/underexposure.Equipment
This was shot with my trusty Nikon D5100 and 55-200mm f/4-5.6. Literally just a kit set. It may just be a basic lens, but I've been pleasantly surprised with its optical capability. Since then I've bought all kinds of primes, but I still find this lens useful from time to time.Inspiration
I'd been sitting along that side of the beach for an hour or so waiting for someone memorable to walk along the cliff so I could get a nice shot in the evening side/backlight. As it turned out, the dog was the most memorable person of the day!Editing
I balanced the shadows out a bit, they were a bit too dark. At the same time I had to keep them dark enough to retain that beautiful fade to black in the rocks. I also balanced the color a bit, but I'm still not totally happy with it, there's still a little too much green in the hue.In my camera bag

Find a spot you know works, and stick to it until you get what you want. I've gotten multiple shots I like here, so I know it will always be a viable place to go for a good capture. This is one of many spots I've found and visit regularly. If you feel your shooting spots start to get boring, find new places and add them to your list! You never know when you'll need one of them for a photo shoot.
