Behind The Lens

Location

Taken a little way off the trail in the rocky mountains of Canada.

Time

Taken in the early morning

Lighting

Morning lighting is very important to me. Personally I like the soft light a lot, especially with natural things. That being said I've gotten good pictures in all kinds of different lighting conditions. Experimenting, styles of lighting and what we like in photos is very subjective, I've hated photos other people have loved and vice versa.

Equipment

EOS 5D Mark IV with a EF 24mm-105mm L series lense. I didn't use a tripod here because I didn't want to cause too much disturbance to the forest floor.

Inspiration

I just liked the dew on the flowers and the surrounding area around them. Sometimes inspiration is just seeing something that you like.

Editing

Just a little tweaking in lightroom and a little bit of a blur in photoshop. Post is really quick for most of my photos unless I'm working on some grand project like a waterfall, mountain range or if I'm working for a client (average commercial photo is somewhere between an hour and eight hours for me).

In my camera bag

Depending on what I'm shooting my equipment varies but my main case contains a Tamron G2 150-600mm super telephoto, a 17-40mm L series lense and my 24-105mm L lense. For my tripod i use a manfrotto befree series tripod because it's light and hiking in the mountains takes a lot of effort without adding a ton of weight. Peak design's capture V3 and their Slide strap are on all my bags and cameras. I also carry a variety of different filters but the exact types are very dependent on what you want to do with them, sometimes knowing when to not use a filter is as important as knowing when to. My backpack is a 5.11 Tactical Rush 72 pack, it's big enough that i can carry my case inside it and still have room for extra clothing, water, food and other supplies like my medical kit and splint. I always carry bear bangers and bear spray with me when hiking in the woods.

Feedback

1. The really big one is never be afraid to try different things. With the digital age we aren't as limited in the number of photos we can take, so take lots from different angles and directions. This photo almost wasn't taken because I didn't like it as much as some of the other angles but I knew I'd regret not taking a chance on it and I think it came out the best in the set. 2. Get up early, stay up late, try all times of the day and find the one you like best. 3. Always keep an eye out off the path, just don't stray too far or you could very easily find yourself lost, most of those trees and bushes really do look the same. I carry a watch with a built in compass and a GPS device. 4. Nature works to it's own schedule and is not forgiving at times, be aware of your surroundings. I live in an area with predatory wildlife and while Bears and cougars will usually leave people be, I always have bear bangers and bear spray. Weather here can change fast, it can drop 10 degrees (C) fast and rain or snow can come very suddenly. Let people know where you are going in the woods, even if it's just a general area. Finally be prepared to get yourself out of a terrible situation, if you are alone in the woods you may have to deal with everything alone without any help. I find cell service is at four bars right up until you need it most. I carry fire starters, some paracord, athletic tape, a pretty advanced medical kit and a SAM splint in my pack so that if I ever do get hurt I can potentially treat it or set up shelter and wait. 5. Finally don't worry about not having the very best in gear, Yes I took this with a high end camera with a high end lense but I could have gotten a very similar result with my old T6I.
