Pinus ponderosa. The purplish structures are the developing male cones; when mature (about a week), they will turn brown and papery, and emit showers of green-gold pollen. The dry brown papery pollen cones often remain on the tree a year or two. The gold-brown-white structure at the end of the pollen cones is this-year's twig-needle bud, just starting to expand.
