The name Douglas-fir is hyphenated to show it is not a true fir. The three buds at the end of last-year's twig are starting to expand. Eachwill grow to about 4-inches long, with the central axis hardening to a twig, and needles sperad along its length, so that it will look like last-year's twig to teh right. Looking closely at last-year's twig, one can see the unique needle base (twist to a sucker-like woody attachment) that is unique to Douglas-fir. Near Los Alamos, New Mexico.
