Location
I took this photo in Grand Rapids, Michigan at a church just outside the city. Jon had scoped this rail before and we went back on a chill afternoon to shoot.Time
I shot this in the middle of the afternoon, the sun was pretty high in the sky causing harsh shadows so I used two Elinchrom ELB 400sLighting
Because the sun was so harsh and directly above I used two Elinchrom ELB 400 strobe units with HS heads.Equipment
Shot with Nikon D800, 24-70 2.8 and a pair of Elinchrom strobe units.Inspiration
I wanted to show how steep the angle of the stairs really was, this is a good 12 foot vertical drop and from the other angle, huge as the stairs still looked, the steepness wasn't as noticeable.Editing
I didn't do much post processing for this images, really I try and keep my post work to under 90 seconds a photos... get it right in the camera! In my camera bag
I always carry two cameras because I break things so often, right now those two bodies are the Nikon D5 and D800. I always have my 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, and a couple Elinchrom strobes. When the situations call for it I also use the 16mm fisheye, 300 2.8, or the 200-400 f4. I use Manfrotto stacker stands, these things are beasts! I beat mine up everyday and they still work perfect! All of this goes into an Fstop Gear bag, the Anja is my go to unless I need the extra space of one of their larger packs.Feedback
Learn to set up your equipment quickly and know the where you want to shoot from before the athlete starts. Athletes doing sketchy and dangerous tricks need to concentrate on what they are doing, not distractions of photographers moving light stands. Communication is key, if you don't know whats going on then you're going to miss it!
