A female Long-earred Owl sleeps while her two owlets perch themselves on a limb far from the protection of their nest. She brought the owlets up into the higher reaches of the tree, called "branching," to acclimate them to the elements of Nature and ready them to be on their own. The owl family were photographed at Corn Creek in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge near Las Vegas, Nevada, in late April.
