Autumn in the mountains

Found this motive when I was returning home. I had to fight off the mosquitos but I believe it was well worth it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken above Kvarstadsetra in the mountains close to Lillehammer. I am self-taught and started photographing many years ago using film cameras, but with my latest camera I’ve had a boost in interest and enjoy photographing more than ever.

Time

This image was last one taken on the way back to our cabin. It was just after 6 PM on August 13 2017. There was no wind so I had a tough fight with the mosquitos and some itchy rashes to show for it afterwards.

Lighting

The water created a mirror and the sun was in the perfect position for the reflections in the water. I included the weed by purpose both as a lead-in and to create additional interest.

Equipment

This photo was shot handheld with a Nikon D810 and a 24-70 mm F 2.8 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I’ve passed this small lake many times and always thought it would be a nice place to photograph. This time I had my camera and the conditions was perfect (except for the mosquitos).

Editing

This photo is pretty much right out of the camera. I shoot in raw, and at that time I only did minor edits in Adobe Lightroom. For this image I adjusted for the lens in use, added a little contrast and tweaked the saturation.

In my camera bag

My go-to lens is the Nikon 24-70 mm F/2.8 and I always bring this. What other equipment I bring for landscape photography depends on whether I’m walking or can drive to the location. If I can drive I normally bring my Nikon 14-24 mm F/2.8, 70-200 mm F/4 too. If I have to walk far, I bring one extra lens at most. Depending on what I plan to photograph I also bring my 150 mm polarization filter and ND filters.

Feedback

On most earlier occasions when I’ve passed this lake it has been quite windy and it would be impossible to take a photo where the water looks like a mirror. The only option then would be to use ND filter, like a Big Stopper, to freeze the water.
