Location
This photo was taken on the edge of tidal lake close to my home at Lake Illawarra, Australia.Time
It was taken just on sunrise. I remember seeing the sand appear to be moving and when I looked closer there were hundreds of soldier crabs emerging from the sand around the edge of the lake. This happens several times a year at different times of day, depending on the tides and moon phases. I had to be quick to take the photo as once I tried to get close they would scramble away and try to bury themselves once again in the sand.Lighting
The lighting was purely what was available from the rising sun. I don’t use flash.Equipment
The camera I used was an Olympus E-M5MKII with an Olympus M. Zuiko 75-300 m lens. Nothing else was used.Inspiration
I walk on the beach most mornings at sunrise looking for that one inspirational photo and on this particular morning I was blessed with this vision of these tiny creatures emerging from the sand just as I was going for my morning walk. I had often seen 10 - 20 of them before, but never hundreds as on this occasion. It was a spectacular sight to see.Editing
I don’t usually do any post processing and didn’t on this occasion. In my camera bag
I usually have my Olympus EM5 mkII ( a replacement for an Olympus EPL 7 which got destroyed when I fell in the ocean with it). I carry an M.Zuiko 75-300. f/4.8 and a M.Zuiko 12-100 f/4 PRO . I also carry an Olympus TG5 as this is a great camera for underwater shots which I take in local rock pools.Feedback
This photo was purely about being in the right place at the right time. I was so lucky to have my camera in my hand at the time to be able to capture some of the phenomena happening in front of me.
