Clematis columbiana. A climbing vine, here climbing the trunk of a dead tree. Common in the Rocky Mountain region in mid-elevation mountains. Botanically, the lilac-purple structures are not petals, but rather sepals. Later in the summer, the fruits are a tuft of feathery hairs.
A related species has white flowers.
Near Los Alamos, New Mexico.
