Prunus virginiana var. melanocarpa. The species is common across the U.S. This variety is common throughout the western U.S. It is a large deciduopus shrub, sometimes a small tree, growing along streams and in other most places. Berries form in August or September. The "choke" part of the name comes from the fact that the berries, by themselves, are very sour or astringent. But they make great jams and syrups.
