Amazing discoveries can be had simply by exploring the backyard with cell phone in hand. Phone cameras do just a little of what more expensive equipment can do. With limited capabilities, however, come the opportunity to know your equipment well and be a quick study. Imagination makes assets of limitations. Here a long winter's cold and dark provides us with just the right conditions for this flash of a beautiful forsythia.

Behind The Lens

Location

Backyard natural history is available for our enjoyment year round. This forsythia has been blooming in my backyard with varying degrees of success for many years somewhat sheltered by a white spruce characterized by my tree expert as "overly mature."

Time

Judging by the background, this was taken in the afternoon while the sun was under a cloud. No doubt a quiet moment between breezes was selected.

Lighting

Always experimenting, I took more than one shot. This one with flash provided the best results.

Equipment

My android phone's camera is my constant companion. I have much fancier equipment, but it seems always absent when I would most like to have it with me.

Inspiration

Downward-facing flowers are always a challenge to capture. Previous years I had been going to snap this forsythia, but didn't get around to it before the blossoms expired. In 2018, I made a special effort and was pleased with this result.

Editing

Years ago I began learning Picasa and I have kept using it since, even though it has been discontinued.I adjust contrast and add framing and text to finish the image. Sharpness is also sometimes adjusted.

In my camera bag

No bag! As cell phone cameras have become more and more sophisticated, I have enjoyed "bagless" freedom! If I were making a living with my photography, I would take a bag full of filters, lenses, etc. However, as a perpetual amateur and easily distracted naturalist, I go light, following the inspiration of the moment.

Feedback

Take the buds out of your ears and put them in your images! Being aware of the natural world is a privilege. Before your eyesight fades, your hearing diminishes and joints cause problems, get out in your own backyard and explore!
