Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken inside a pub in the central Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Time

The light was streaming in a large picture window from an early afternoon sun, which had raised outdoor temperatures to 100 degrees fahrenheit.

Lighting

Only ambient light was used.

Equipment

This was taken with one of several basic digital cameras I owned about 10 years ago.

Inspiration

I was taking pictures of colleagues as we toured the area.

Editing

Post-processing was when this image first came to my attention. The original picture showed 3 of my colleagues, the table, etc. On second look, I said to myself, "Wait a minute there, Jeff. What's that over in the right-hand corner?" That was the "aha" moment. I cropped the picture (probably using Photoshop at that time) to include just the one colleague, and voila! Framing was added later when I discovered Picasa just a few months before Google decided to discontinue it.

In my camera bag

Bag? What bag? When this image was taken I carried a simple digital camera. Cell phones were unknown.Today I'm an old fart who can't remember where I've left anything. So I carry a phone, hoping I remember that! I see photos somewhat the same way a composer hears music before it is written down. That's a gift. My photos are impulsive, unplanned. Most are in some way unsatisfactory. All could be improved. But my interpretations are occasionally inspired.

Feedback

Never give up. Review your work carefully. Sometimes the most casual of photos have a little genius in them. You don't need your bag all the time. Your inspiration isn't in there, it's in your mind. Hopefully, you brought that with you!
