Behind The Lens

Location

In a hospital theater during the birth of this beautiful baby. Not all hospitals and doctors allow access to photograph births. I was very lucky this doctor was willing. Birth photography is fast becoming popular because it is one of the most amazing moments a parent goes through. In this day and age photography is making it's way into the most intimate and important areas of our lives.

Time

This was around noon (12pm) as baby was born. In theater though you work only with the operating lights provided, so no matter the time of day, it'll always look the same.

Lighting

Operating lights are incredibly bright, you need to act quickly as they hold baby up for the parents, to make sure you don't over expose on the baby, because the parents want to see all the details of their baby in that moment captured forever. The doctors

Equipment

I used my Canon 7D and wide angle 10-22mm F4. The wide angle let me capture a much wider scene of the mom meeting her son for the first time. In theater you are not able to bring in lots of equipment, so you can only bring in what you can carry. I take in 2 camera bodies with their lenses, and no flash is allowed, because it can affect the doctors ability to do their work. You get told where you can stand and you don't move until the baby is born and taken to be checked by the pediatrician.

Inspiration

I'm a birth and newborn photographer, so I get hired by parents to photograph these incredibly special moments. My aim is to give the parents the most amazing photos of their child's birth, while being discrete and respectful of everyone in the room. A birth is a sacred space and to be invited in is a privilege not to be taken lightly.

Editing

I converted to black and white and did minimal corrections like curves and bringing back the shadows in Lightroom. Because birth is more a documentary form of photography I don't do massive amounts of editing. I prefer to have a fly on the wall effect and capture things as I see them.

In my camera bag

I'm now shooting with a 6D and my trusted 7D. I have a few lenses but mostly use my 35mm F2 and my 10-22mm wide. I prefer natural light which helps me in these lighting situations as I can adjust quickly with changing light.

Feedback

It is very important to get some training and advice in your area with regards to birth photography. It's not for everyone. You live an on call life where you have to drop everything at a moments notice to go capture a birth. Even a c-section birth is never 100% scheduled. It is also very important to respect the hospital and doctors you will be working with. For birth photography you need to be able to think on your toes, to quickly act and snap photos that are more important than any others you might ever take.
