Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my studio, Three O Studios, in Lexington, KY.

Time

This was a 2 hour mid day shoot with my friend and Cincinnati model Mel Smith.

Lighting

We used one Profoto light camera left with a zoom reflector and the gobo was a beaded curtain we had purchased from a big box store.

Equipment

My camera was a Canon 5D mark III and )I think) the Canon 100 macro 2.8.

Inspiration

We were working with one light setups and experimenting with gobos. We had played with louvered shutters, various fabrics and laces and this curtain.

Editing

Post processing was just minor dodging and burning and a bare minimum of skin softening. This is probably as close to a strait out of camera image as I have in my port.

In my camera bag

I am a Canon shooter. My body is a 5D Mark iii. My favorite lens is the Canon 100 macro 2.8 which I use on a daily basis. I also carry a Canon 16-35 for the wide shots or where I am looking for that unique distortion. From Tamron I carry the 70-200 and the 24-70. And lastly I sometimes use the Sigma 50 Art as a portrait lens.

Feedback

Play with the spacing between the three elements of this shot: the light, the gobo and the model until you find the shadow you are looking for. It might be harsher or softer than mine but shoot many alternatives.Look at them closely in post to see the small variations and select the image you want. Have your model curve his/her body repeatedly. The curve of the straight line shadows as it passed by ribs or hips is what makes this shot.
